McTominay believes Manchester United can still win at Camp Nou
Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay believes the Red Devils have a good chance of overturning the 1-0 Champions League quarter-final deficit to Barcelona when they face them at the Camp Nou next week. The Red Devils started the home leg of the quarter-final tie on the backfoot, and this allowed the Blaugrana to open the scoresheet through a Luke Shaw own goal in the 12th minute after some fine game play between Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Thereafter, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sought to play with a positive mindset which restricted the threat from the Blaugrana, but they failed to test Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the opposition goal through the entire game. Speaking after the match, McTominay said that the Red Devils probably offered too much respect to the opposition and that eventually cost them in a 1-0 loss.
However, “the Scotland international refused to rule out a comeback from the Red Devils after the dramatic turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain during the previous round“, he told BT Sport: “In the first 10 minutes we showed them far too much respect but after that we adapted really well and looked the better side. It was an entertaining night to watch on the TV. Barcelona are top class, it’s difficult to get the ball. It’s not as easy as going out to press like mayhem. We have to do more in front of goal, score more goals. It’s a big second leg to go. “It’s only half time“. We are Manchester United and you can never write us off.”
Barcelona appeared fatigued during the closing stages of the game, and that may have to do with the weekend game against Atletico Madrid where United had no action. The second leg of the Champions League quarter-final is set to take place at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night, and United face a stiff challenge, considering the Blaugrana have remained unbeaten for the past 30 European games at their stadium.
